“I don’t know if you’ve noticed or not, but hell is a ‘hot topic’ in Christian circles these days!
In light of that, I am so excited to share with you what I’ve been learning over the past couple years. After spending most of my life with the unquestioning belief in hell (a.k.a. eternal conscious torment and separation from God), how amazing and wonderful to discover that hell is nothing more than a man-made, pagan tradition of men, inserted into the early Roman Church (several centuries AFTER Christ) as a means to control people with fear. In fact, hell (or the concept) isn’t even found in our Hebrew or Greek Scriptures, only in mistranslations!
What’s the alternative? After many hundreds of hours (over the course of a whole year) of in-depth study of Scriptures in their original languages, as well as careful analysis of Church history and Hebrew perspectives, I now believe that the Gospel is truly Good News for ALL people (Luke 2:10), not ultimately bad news for most people. And I’m far from alone in this belief. Many millions of devoted, studious, faithful Christ-followers worldwide, from every denomination and creed, are questioning the validity of hell, and they are coming back to the predominant Christian teaching of the first five centuries after Christ. This Scriptural belief upholds that God is really that sovereign and that loving to save ALL people in a purposeful, corrective, reconciliatory plan that reaches long past this short lifetime, much like you would expect from any Loving Parent.
If you’ve ever had doubts or questions about the teaching of hell, or if you’ve had concerns about the seeming contradictions of God’s character, as interpreted through the lenses of traditional orthodox Christianity, then I believe that my newest book, Raising Hell: Christianity’s Most Controversial Doctrine Put Under Fire could likely open your eyes to a new view of the Bible and a radical new look at God’s UNFAILING love for all mankind.
Perhaps most importantly, if you’re curious to know why we’ve embraced a perspective on Scriptures that most ‘mainstream’ evangelical leaders have called ‘heretical,’ then we hope you’ll read Raising Hell and let us know what you think! Also, be sure to visit our website (http://www.RaisingHellBook.com), as well as check out some of the reader reviews on Amazon.com to see what kind of feedback folks from all walks of life have given. I’m sure you have 101 questions forming already. That’s great! You’ll most likely find a thoughtful answer in the book, as I had all the same questions initially. So don’t put it off; find out why I believe, along with my husband, that it’s time for all hell to break loose!

‘I FRIGGIN LOVE YOUR BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bravo, Julie!! This ex-Pastor gives you a hundred thumbs up for your scholarship, research, passion and immovable and probing heart. I am a HUGE advocate of this book—it is probably on my top ten books of all time. Don’t hesitate buying a copy today with my HIGHEST recommendation.’–Terre Woodhead, Washington State
‘Truly amazing book—long needed as hell and a punishing God has been a major stumbling block to my grown children. Your message, so clearly written and easy to read, resonates powerfully, inasmuch as your scripture examples are among my favorite. I am a trustee of The Center of Theological Inquiry connected to the Princeton Theological Seminary. While I am not a theologian, your argument is persuasive.’–Conrad Plimpton, Arizona
‘I can heartily recommend Raising Hell as one of the best books I have read on the subject. Julie leaves no stone unturned in her search to find the truth! It is well-researched, convincing, and gracefully communicated. There are many books out there, and no doubt you will want to do additional study, but I can think of no better place to start than here. Be prepared to have your faith challenged, your paradigms shattered, and your heart filled with joy and wonderment at the vastness of God’s great love!’–Ken Eckerty, Florida
‘Ten years ago, I would have called anyone who agreed with what Ferwerda believes a ‘heretic.’ Now I am beginning to wonder if maybe what we thought was an orthodox view of hell is actually the real heresy. To believe in the doctrine of eternal torment in light of the character of God revealed in the Person of His Son Jesus is difficult. To believe in it in light of what the Scriptures actually say is impossible. My hope is that this historical work will receive the widest readership possible. It’s time for people to discover that the Good News may actually be better than we thought.’ –Dave L., Minnesota
